Balancing The Root Chakra

While studying the Sacral Chakra, much of the research I was finding online kept leading me to awareness of just how connected the Sacral Chakra is to the Root Chakra. If a person's Root Chakra is blocked or out of balance, guess what? Not a huge surprise, but your Sacral Chakra will be out of balance as well. The Root and Sacral even share or overlap certain organs or muscles in the body, including the pelvic floor, the bladder, the sciatic nerve (located in the lower back), and some of our sexual organs. Many teachers and healers even believe that if the Root Chakra is blocked, you must begin there for healing before you can begin to balance any of your other Chakra systems. Once we learn just what the Root Chakra is, it will definitely make sense to you why this is the case.

What is the Root Chakra?

So just what is the Root Chakra? It is our first Chakra and is located at the base of the spine, the pelvic floor, and our first three vertebrae.  It also includes your feet and legs. It is what grounds us and forms our "roots" so to speak. The Root Chakra is there to meet not only your basic needs of food, water, shelter, and security, but our emotional needs too. Not only does it address our physical safety, but at our root, we must feel emotionally safe as well. A human being needs genuine connection with other humans. We need to feel as we belong in our "tribe" so to speak or our family. So one can just imagine that the Root Chakra is at least partially blocked for most humans and this can begin as early as childhood or even infancy. Any child that has had their needs neglected in some way can begin life with a blockage and this would obviously create a spiral effect of dysfunction. Even if you had a wonderful and stable childhood, there may come a point in one's life that you feel as though you don't fit in, or you are in relationships and jobs that aren't meeting your emotional needs. One may even deal with a financial hardship that puts those primary basic needs at risk. Click here for more information on the Root Chakra.

This understanding of the Root Chakra gave me the tools to ponder my own Root and start think about how I might be blocked. If indeed it is as the name implies, it is the very roots of my foundation. My physical foundation and my family and personal connections. In my research, for those of us who are particularly spiritual, your Root Chakra blockages can even stem from a genealogical perspective. Many spiritual philosophers (and now some in main stream science) believe that in our very DNA we carry the emotional burdens of our ancestors. Now, I do not know any of the traumatic experiences of those that came before me, but I do know of my own trauma. My childhood was not particularly normal, and at times dysfunctional and abusive. My relationship with my mother, although I do love her and maintain a good relationship with her as an adult, is a huge wound for me. She did the best she could to provide emotional support, considering the serious lack of it from her mother, but it left me with a hole always needing to be filled. I often felt insecure in my life and typically struggle to feel like I belong.

My romantic relationships were heavily influenced from the psychological torment endured by an abusive step father from ages 13-17. Without going into too much detail, I have usually craved my partners' constant approval, and pleasing them to meet their needs to the point of my own detriment. I have even been in abusive relationships with narcissistic types. Fun times! I have luckily married a very good man. Still, I struggle with getting my own needs met. I consistently put my children's and husband's needs before my own. I sometimes let my children walk all over me because god forbid they think I don't love them. With my husband, I often seek his approval instead of feeling secure with my own choices. I am so glad now the awareness of this and am actively making different choices on a daily basis to change my mindset and habits. But do you think my Root Chakra is still blocked? My bet would be probably so!

Signs of an Imbalanced Root Chakra

Some physical signs of an imbalanced Root Chakra include problems with the feet, legs, lower back, bladder, and elimination. Men may have trouble with their prostate. Emotional imbalances that are sign of a blockage of the Root Chakra are anxiety, depression, anger, frustration, greed, negativity, and insecurity. Eating disorders are also a sign that your Root Chakra is out of balance. Click here  for a deeper dive into the emotional imbalances of the Root Chakra.

How to Heal the Root Chakra

There are simple tangible things that you can do to start the process of helping to unblock the Root Chakra like wearing the color red, eating foods that are red or rich in iron, and aromatherapy. You can also take advantage of healing crystals such as jasper, bloodstone, and garnet. Read 6 simple steps to heal the Root Chakra for more information!

Alas, if it were only that easy to unblock the Root Chakra by surrounding ourselves inside and out with the color red. But as you can imagine, the "root" runs deep. It is our foundation and the core of who we are. It lays the groundwork for the rest of the Chakras and for us to operate in harmony with ourselves and our world. They are often deep emotional wounds that stem back for years and decades for individuals. There is a lot work that goes into any kind of healing. It requires strength, courage, and a willingness to face truths about ourselves and our past. But I believe we can heal the Root Chakra, as with anything else in life. I highly encourage you to watch this video from Teal Swan as she gives us an in depth understanding of the Root Chakra and discusses those deeper questions to ask yourself. She also provides tangible things you can do for unblockage and balance.
