Balancing Your Sacral Chakra
Being diagnosed with Pelvic Floor Dysfunction, you experience a range of emotions, from relief that your pain has a label, to sometimes despair, as your doctors advise you of your chronic condition that you must manage for the rest of your life. Yes, you will have periods of normalcy (sometimes long stretches of no symptoms), but the introduction of chronic stress, a life trauma, or medical condition to the pelvic region of your body can produce a flare. What brings me comfort is knowing I have lots of different treatment options and a team of medical professionals that are dedicated to my health.
Taking advantage of all that western medicine has to offer is so important for many conditions that we as humans suffer from. Believe me, I would never be one to dismiss all of the ground breaking medical breakthroughs that science has discovered. All of those traditional methods to assist me with my chronic pain are in my tool kit and I use them daily. But I have always been a science meets spirituality kind of girl. In all honesty, I lean more on my spirituality while appreciating and taking advantage of modern medicine. Naturally, this has led me on quest to go within and think about how I can help with my healing journey from a non medical perspective. This started me thinking about my sacral chakra. I have had a Reiki therapy session in the past and felt like it was beneficial in cleansing my chakras and my energy. You can click on the link, but in short, Reiki is treatment using light hand touch therapy to cleanse the body's energy system. It respects the belief that we are a holistic system and that the mind and body are tightly connected.
But hold on, you might be asking, you lost me at Chakras. Some of you might be asking what they heck are these and why am I just now hearing this word? Or maybe you have that super hippie friend that's always talking about cleansing her Chakras but you have no ideas what she's really talking about or if you even believe her.....
The Chakra System
The word Chakra is a Sanskrit word, meaning "wheel" or "circle", and it refers to the individual circular spinning wheels of energy located throughout the body. The Chakra System is a complex network of energy channels connecting these wheels and is mapped throughout the whole body. There are 7 main Chakras and unfortunately they can often become blocked. When this happens you will often find your body or emotional health being compromised. Obviously, balancing the Chakra system can help alleviate medical aliments and create healthy emotional states. Some ways to help balance your Chakra system are yoga, meditation, and Reiki therapy. All of this information is directly quoted from Navuturesorts.com. The Sacral Chakra
Your Sacral Chakra is associated with creativity and power. It is also associated with your senses, sexuality, and reproduction. The color of the Sacral Chakra is orange. If any of you were able to see our previous Facebook livestream on Pelvic Health, you may remember how I discussed that in Tantra, a Buddhist term, the belief is that your pelvis is your core and the center of your power. So it's no surprise that the Sacra Chakra is also associated with personal power. When your Sacral Chakra is out of balance, physically a person will have medical problems with their pelvic region, bladder or kidneys, urinary tract, bowel function, sexual organs, and lower back pain. Can anyone say Pelvic Floor Dysfunction? Based on my physical symptoms, I am a walking poster child for an imbalanced Sacral Chakra.
Recall how I have often discussed of the mind-body connection. Without going into my life story over the past several years, I can definitely see that the suppression of my personal power and little opportunity for a creative outlet contributed to my imbalance. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be a full time mom and for my husband's career giving us the financial ability to make this happen. We are also fortunate for our extended family over the years. Still, my personal and professional career goals took a back seat to being a mother and to my husband's career. Having to move 4 times and across 3 states in a matter of 4 years for my husband's career definitely left me feeling powerless and out of control. Sure, it was done for the right reasons and I know my husband was trying to do the right thing for our family. Rationalization doesn't always make the emotional toll it takes on you any easier. I never thought that consciously there was any resentment, but perhaps the body knows better? We are only human, after all. We are allowed to feel that tug of desire between caretaking and pursuing our passions, particularly as a woman. Could it be that the imbalance in our personal life or emotional state can manifest in the body? If so, I am a prime example and I do think there's a connection. How to unblock the Sacral Chakra
Found on Wellandgood.com, here are 7 things you can do to help balance this Chakra. First, acknowledge that there is an imbalance. You must always identify the problem before it can be addressed. A Reiki treatment could come in handy here. Second, the Sacral Chakra is connected to the element of water, so make sure you are staying well hydrated. From a former carbonated water addict, I recommend drinking good old fashioned H2O. Carbonation is not good for healing the pelvic region. You can also take warm baths and visit any ocean or lake often if they are nearby.
The rest of the 7 helpful treatments include getting that creative mind brewing again and do something you enjoy! Paint, write poetry, or perhaps like me, you enjoy baking. I used to have a professional cake business that brought me a lot of joy and I did feel creatively fulfilled before I had to give it up. You can also research sacral chants and meditations specific to healing that region. Hip opening movements and The Goddess Pose can help. You can also use crystal therapy and focus on gems such as citrine and amber. Another easy way to help your Sacral Chakra begin to balance is to focus on foods that are rich in the beautiful hues of the color orange, such as cinnamon, sweet potato, turmeric, and oranges.
Below are 2 videos that I highly recommend. One is a mediation exercise that is specific to healing the Root Chakra and the Sacral Chakra. I did not mention this in the post, but often if our Root Chakra is blocked, you will find an imbalance in the Sacral Chakra as well. The meditation video I have linked below is an exercise to address both Chakras.
The second video is a discussion of your Sacral Chakra and how to heal from a bit of a deeper perspective. It is from an international and motivational speaker named Teal Swan. I really love Teal. She has so many Youtube videos on a range of topics from a spiritual perspective. She has a knack for tackling the root of emotional distress and often gives practical advise on ways to solve your problems.
